The purpose of the role is to primarily provide legal support and management of matters for the LNG team in Centrica’s Energy Marketing and Trading business unit (“EM&T”). Broadly, EM&T covers Centrica’s interests in the global LNG markets and European energy markets.
The LNG team’s activities range from short term trading through to mid to long term structured transactions such as LNG sale and purchase agreements, time and voyage charterparties, LNG road tanker agreements, tolling agreements, terminal use agreements and other arrangements related to the trading of LNG.
This role is to work with the existing team and help support the continuing growth of Centrica’s LNG business.
The job holder will be required to manage a varied legal work load. Key areas will include:
providing strategic legal advice to the LNG team to assist with the negotiation of LNG agreements;
working with the LNG business developers in “Structured” LNG transactions;
working with LNG’s Contract Management team which are responsible for the day to day operational management of all physical LNG contracts;
working with the LNG trading team on prompt and medium term transactions, including chartering of LNG Ships and also longer term transactions (including strategic Joint Ventures);
working as part of project teams either for transactional work or to help implement new processes, products and systems such as approving new strategic business initiatives, new products and entry into new geographical jurisdictions;
assessing applicable forthcoming legislation changes (in conjunction with Regulatory Affairs and Compliance as appropriate) and advising EM&T on potential impact;
managing complex dispute resolution with external counterparties;
contributing to various initiatives within the EM&T and Centrica Group legal teams;
working on a number of transactions and people across the Centrica Group including M&A and Finance; and
instructing and working with external counsel.
In Centrica, the legal function is proactive – integrated throughout the organisation as an enabler and supporter of the business – rather than reactive, compliance-oriented and bureaucratic. It is commercially oriented and service-focused. It handles as much as possible in-house, operating a fully formed and cost-effective practice with an intimate relationship with the business.
The job holder will have experience from either at a top tier law firm or in-house in the commodities sector with specific experience in Gas and/or LNG trading and marketing.
English law qualification is preferred but not essential.
