Your Mission: AfterShip is seeking an experienced and dynamic General Counsel to lead its Legal Department.
As the General Counsel, you will be responsible for providing strategic legal guidance, managing risks, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations (including privacy laws on a global scale), negotiate deals with customers and vendors, manage the department budget, the IP portfolio, build strong processes and manage dispute resolutions. You will play a crucial role in fostering innovation and supporting the company's growth initiatives by leading a small internal team of lawyers, IT experts and managing external law firms (DPO, etc.). The ideal candidate will be a seasoned legal professional with a strong background in IT and privacy laws, excellent leadership skills, and a deep understanding of the e-commerce industry.
The General Counsel is part of AfterShip's global team. As such, it may be required to work outside typical office hours in order to accommodate APAC/EU/NA time zones. As such, the successful candidate would be able to exercise flexible hours accordingly, and ideally be located in Eastern Time.
What You'll Do: Develop and implement the legal department's strategic vision and objectives in alignment with AfterShip's business goalsLead and manage a team of legal professionals, including Junior Legal Counsel and Trainees, providing mentorship and guidanceSupport the company in all commercial and legal matters, while proactively identifying and mitigating the risk profile of the companyContribute to company policies, processes, guidelines and procedures designed to manage and mitigate legal risks.Provide legal guidance and support to various departments, including marketing and innovation teams.Oversee contract negotiation with big e-commerce customers, vendors and carriers, ensuring favorable terms for AfterShip while protecting its interests. This may entail reviewing and/or drafting various agreements to support the Sales Team or providing guidance.Ensure AfterShip's compliance with privacy laws and regulations, including GDPR.Work with IT teams to further improve current processes and privacy-by-design systems.Oversee the management of data processing agreements (DPAs) and standard contractual clauses (SCCs) with customers, vendors and carriers.Collaborate with the Data Protection Officer (DPO), IT specialist and IT security team to implement data protection measures and conduct privacy assessments.Protect AfterShip's intellectual property by managing its trademark and patent portfolios.File and enforce trademark and patent internationally with support of external agencies.Ensure that the company's brand identity is safeguarded and innovation is defended.Who We're Looking For: Masters degree in Law.10-15 years of relevant legal experience, including in-house experience in the e-commerce or IT industry.Strong understanding of privacy law compliance, IT law and complex commercial contract negotiation.Proven leadership and managerial skills with the ability to mentor and develop legal team members.Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across teams and influence decision-making at all levels of the organization.Proactive and adaptable approach to legal problem-solving in a fast-paced environment.Understanding of APAC culture is a plus.If you believe you have the qualifications and passion to lead our Legal Department and support AfterShip's continued success, we encourage you to apply for the role of General Counsel.
