Research Fellow in Airframe design and manufacturing enhanced by AI.Job title:  Research Fellow in Airframe design and manufacturing enhanced by AIReference: ASD0006School/Department: Aeroelastic and Structural Design Lab - Aerospace Engineering Department - University Carlos III of MadridSalary: 32.000€ – 40.000€ per annum, depending in skills and experience (minimum 32.000€ with relevant PhD) Eligibility: Permit to work in SpainContract status: contract for a period of 2 years, extendable to 3 yearsWorking hours: full time (40h per week)Location: UC3M Leganés campus, Leganés, Madrid, SpainStart Date: ideally 15/02/24 (negotiable)Reporting to: Prof Andrea CiniApplication closing date: 31/01/2024Aerospace Engineering Research Group at UC3MThe University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M) is a public university characterised by its strong international focus, the quality of its faculty, excellence in research and commitment to society. It was founded in 1989 and its main goal is to provide specialised training in Law, Social Sciences and Engineering, as well as to become a prime European research centre. In addition, UC3M pursues the creation of an innovative university and seeks to offer a university model based on a quality-oriented philosophy. The university is located in the southern metropolitan area of Madrid and consists of five centres, 2 Faculties, 1 Technical School, 1 School of Graduate Studies and 1 Doctoral School in 4 Campuses. The Aerospace Engineering Research Group was established in 2012 to lead the Aerospace Engineering Area at UC3M. Over these years, the group has been rapidly growing and it is now formed by more than 45 people, including: 13 full-time PhD professors, 7 post-doctoral researchers, 13 part-time experts from Aerospace Industry, and 50 PhD students.ASD LabThe Aeroelastic and Structural Design Lab (ASD Lab) is part of the Aerospace Engineering research group, within the Aerospace Engineering department at UC3M (https://aero.uc3m.es/asd_lab-home/). The ASD Lab research focus, among several other aircraft design aspects on airframe design and manufacturing, sustainable power train integration and non-conventional structures. ASD Lab has a sound background in aircraft structure design and optimisation methodologies, virtual testing and certification, virtual manufacturing and airframe manufacturing and assembly optimisation. The group can claim a sound expertise on advanced material and structure development, such as multifunctional structures, composite non-black metal design and aeroelastic tailoring, multi-fidelity and multidisciplinary airframe optimisations and design for certification and manufacturing. ASD Lab has active strategic collaborations with the most important European aerospace EOM and tier 1 supplier such as Airbus, Airbus Helicopters, Aernnova, GKN, GE, Turkish Aerospace, Leonardo, specifically on airframe design and net zero emission feasibility studies. The Aerospace group has the access to up-to-date material and structure characterisation and testing equipment, commercial and customised simulation software, and high-performance computing capabilities.Job descriptionASD Lab at UC3M is initiating a preliminary selection process to fill a 2 years (extendable to 3)  Research Fellow position in the context of recently awarded research projects TIFON and CETACEO in collaboration with several industrial and academic partners such as Airbus Defence and Space and Navantia) and European project (Horizon Europe http://indigo-sustainableaviation.eu/, Clean Aviation)Responsibilities  This researcher fellow position aims at developing multi-fidelity design procedure for airframe design, and optimisation of new generation green and quite aircraft. The activity will be mainly focus on developing the structural sizing tools defining the airframe internal structures and mass distribution by taking advantage from advance artificial intelligence and machine learning methods. Different level of fidelity as well as several optimisation architecture strategies will be assessed and compared in term of accuracy and computational cost. Minimum weight structural optimisation methods will be developed fostering the implementation of advanced composite materials and multifunctional structures. Preliminary weight estimations will be computed by extensive used of machine learning and AI trained on both modified advanced beam-based FEM and GFEM-based airframe sizing procedures. Mid/high fidelity GFEM will enhance the procedure accuracy by including design details such as assembly techniques and component joints. Machine learning driven size and free size structural optimisations will be develop to optimise material distribution and composite ply shape for minimum weight aeroelastic tailoring. Staking sequences internal optimisation will be coupled with size procedure to enable the automatic generation of composite laminates to maximise weight saving while fulfilling ply book rules and manufacturing constraints. Ply drops and thickness variation strategies will be assessed to seek a suitable trade-off between weight saving and manufacturability. Advanced material and multifunctional structures will be investigated to foster sustainable technologies and powertrains integration. The development of multidisciplinary Design and Optimisation procedures such as aerostructural and aeroelastic optimisation will be supported providing expertise on airframe design and coordinating structural-related activities. Application of AI and machine learning to airframe manufacturing process will be investigated as well.  The activity of the candidate will include:Developing shell-accurate beam element FE model for multi-material hybrid tapered cross-sections.Defining modelling strategy to develop advanced GFEMLeading the application artificial intelligence algorithm to structural design and optimisation  problemsDeveloping AI-driven stress analysis and mass estimation methodsPerforming minimum weight optimisation enhanced by machine learningDeveloping advanced composite material optimisation supported by AIDeveloping a strategy to effectively include certification and manufacturing constraints in airframe optimisation routines using AI and machine learningUsing in-house FE codes (Augusto) and commercial software (Nastran, Abaqus, OptiStruct)Improving airframe manufacturing process using AIManufacturing of an aeroelastic flying demonstratorWrite reports and deliverablesDisseminate the work at international technical conferences and writing high impact papers on international technical journalsSupport R&T and other activities within ASD Lab: o   Supervising BSc and MSc students o  Occasionally supporting teaching activities o  Coordinating some research activities and project tasks o  Contributing to the research development by submission of research proposal o  Supporting the development of composite manufacturing and fatigue and DT experimental labs o  Supporting a spin-off establishment. o  Participate in consultancy and knowledge transfer activitiesQualifications Hold a PhD and demonstrated experience in airframe design, aerostructure analysis, manufacturing and machine learning.Beaning eligible to work in SpainCandidates with a background in aircraft design, aerostructures and FE analysis, composite materials and AI are particularly encouraged to apply.Have an outstanding academic and career record, critical and creative thinking.Proficient in oral and written English.Ability to work independently and proactively on scientific and engineering problems, be self-motivated and capable of working under pressure to meet deadlines.Experience on working in a research team and in previous research project.Experience in student supervision and research leadership FE, programming (Pyton) and coding skills will be an added valueFunding PostDoc position (32.000€ – 40.000€ p.a./year, based on assessment of merit)duration 2 years (extendable to 3)BenefitsThe successful applicants will: Work as part of the European, National and company-funded research projectsBecome part of a young, dynamic, highly qualified, collaborative teamExperience flexible working environment and scheduleParticipate in international conferences and dissemination activities.Participate in proposal writing and fund-raising activities.Participate in experimental lab and spin-off development.Participate in consultancy and knowledge transfer activitiesOpportunity to carry out research internships abroad.Be involved in several research activities within ASD LabHave health coverage under the National Health System.Salary raises and production prices based on performanceWe are seeking talented, passionate, and committed candidates with exceptional skills who aspire to become leaders in topics contributing to the aeronautic revolution. We seek engineers who are available in the short term (to start ideally on mid-February/March), and in exceptional cases, we may consider waiting for slightly longer durations. Owing to the urgency of filling the position as soon as possible, we can only consider individuals already eligible to work in Spain.
